UNI Abuja Chapter Threatened Strike Over VC’s Comments

The University of Abuja Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has last week threatened to call an indefinite strike over the comments of the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof
James Adelabu. In a statement, signed by Dr Clement Chup, the chapter ASUU Chairman, in Gwagwalada on Sunday, the union called on the university council to remove the VC or be ready to face the lecturers’ strike. The statement rejected the VC’s claims in a media interview that his problem with ASUU in the institution was all about “sharing of money’’. It stressed that the VC’s comment was a malicious lie meant to misrepresent issues regarding the formula being used in disbursing revenue generated by the university’s Centre for Distance Learning (CDL) programme. “By the formula, a little percentage goes for the honorarium of participating lecturers by way of allowances, and this is a universal practice,’’ it said. The statement said that ASUU’s position was clear on the allegations of corruption levelled against the VC, which he found difficult to defend. It said that the union had blamed the suspension of some of the university’s faculties on the inability of the VC to sustain the faculties which he inherited from previous university administrations. The statement said that ASUU had, therefore, pronounced a vote of no confidence on Adelabu’s administration, while calling for his
removal in the interest of the university’s peace and progress. (NAN)
