THE management of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), on Wednesday, closed down the institution indefinitely
as a result of protest embarked by students against the suspension of four professional programmes of the university on Tuesday by the Federal Government. Students were given up till 6p.m. on Wednesday by the university’s management to vacate the two campuses of the university.
Minister of Education had, on Tuesday, announced the suspension of the four programmes, which are medicine, engineering, veterinary medicine and agriculture. The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mallam Waziri Garuba, confirmed the protest, but told the Nigerian Tribune that the protest was in reaction to the suspension of the programmes by the Federal Government. He, however, said the protest was peaceful, just as he disclosed that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor James Adelabu, had addressed the students and normalcy was restored, adding that students were originally supposed to proceed on the Easter Break. It was, nonetheless, gathered that the university’s management took the decision to close the university as result of the current security situation in the country and to forestall a situation where hoodlums and other miscreants could hijack the protest and cause havoc in the Federal Capital Territory.
